Support Tiana

Denise Boyd was a long-term resident of Taiwan, a loving mother and a dedicated teacher who needed our help.

Due to Hepatitis C, which she had since a young age, she had been unable to work and we created this campaign to raise enough money so she could get her head above water and rest up without worrying about money.

Sadly, Denise passed away on January 10th, 2022, from liver failure. This leaves her young daughter, 17, without financial resources. Our goal now is to raise money for Tiana’s College Fund, as she hopes to attend university next year. In memory of Denise, we are asking for your support for Tiana.

Denise Boyd with Daughter

Who Was Denise?

Imagine, if you can, you are a highly educated Scottish woman, a single mother, an English teacher for an international school, who has lived and worked in Taiwan for 21 years. You speak fluent Mandarin and Taiwanese, are active in your community in Heng Chun, practice organic gardening, love teaching young children, and cook for neighbors and friends on a regular basis. Life is good.

– Suddenly, you discover you have had Hepatitis C since age 6 and this silent killer has been steadily devastating your liver for over four decades. You have no energy and can no longer work.
– Your only income comes from your 80-year-old parents and it is not enough to make ends meet. Your 17-year-old daughter depends on you. There is no money for food, rent, utilities, or even bus fare.
– To top it off, your doctor has told you that you must rest for 6 months and eliminate stress from your life. This is your only shot at recovery.

With a bit of bad luck this could happen to any of us and we should be so lucky that when that happens, we have a community we can reach out to for help.

Sadly, Denise passed away on January 10th, 2022. Now, in her memory, we ask your support for her daughter Tiana, 17, who hopes to attend university next year.

Denise, a Dear Friend

She was a lovely lady, a Scottish national, living in Taiwan since 2000. Gregarious, athletic and an avid gardener, she had been reduced to poverty by Hepatitis C, and was completely reliant on the support of friends to cover basic needs.

Sadly, it was not enough, and she literally often didn’t know where her next meal would come from. Physically weak, she wondered, “How am I to rest up with no stress when I can’t cover the basic costs of living? I’m behind in the rent and face the possibility of losing my home.”

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a devastating disease. It slowly turns a healthy liver into fibroids. But the liver is so resilient, there are usually no symptoms at all until 90% of liver function is lost. Following treatment, Denise had tested negative for Hepatitis C twice, which means the disease had been cured. The challenge for her was recovering from the damage that was done to her liver over so many years. Sadly, it was too later for her. One of her wishes was to create more awareness about Hepatitis C, out of her concern that others may have the disease, but be unaware of it as she was.

We have now shifted the focus to raising funds for her daughter, Tiana, as a way to support her desire to attend college and in memory of Denise.

Will you help Tiana Now?

Tiana Boyd is a 17-year-old high school student living in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, under the care of her appointed guardian and godmother, Sally Webster, one of Denise’s closest friends. She is attending a the Chung Hua School of Arts, now in her second year. Tiana is a gifted artist and also studies dance. She dreams of going to college in the next year to pursue her passion for the arts. At the moment she has very little in the way of financial resources and that has put her dream at risk.

All donations that have been received for Denise, have now been transferred to a college fund for Tiana. People like you have generously donated over NT$500,000 so far. However, this will not be enough to pay for Tiana’s college education and related expenses. So, we are humbly asking you to donate whatever you can to help Tiana achieve her dreams. Any amount helps and we are so grateful for any support you can give.

Testimonial from Tammy Turner, Steering Committee member

Below is a testimonial from a close friend of Denise’s who is also a member of our Steering Committee. It was written before Denise’s death and it speaks loudly about who Denise was and why we wanted to help her. Now, we want to help her daughter Tiana, in memory of Denise.

Hello, everyone!
Just wanted to follow-up on this with a personal note about how I know Denise and why I am grateful for everyone stepping up to help her. I got to know her because of my permaculture work, which she has been following for years.

About ten years ago, she contacted me about going to her community and helping to lead the local primary school kids in creating an edible landscape based on a design that the children had decided to make – a map of Taiwan! It was just after the whole school had gone to see the documentary film 看見台灣, Beyond Beauty – Taiwan from Above, which was a big inspiration for them. So, I got myself down there and Denise was so cool. She, with the help of her local community, took care of me and we set about making a beautiful edible landscape in the shape of Taiwan. We’ve stayed in touch ever since that time.

I knew that she had struggled a bit but also had friends nearby. Then these few years really weren’t a friend to Denise. She always braved the challenges, but this last health challenge and not being able to work (not to mention the lack of opportunities where she lives in part due to the pandemic) has brought her to the literal edge.

She wrote to me when she was nearing the end of her Hep C treatment about two months ago. She didn’t mention her financial situation to me, but she wanted my help in supporting her new mission in Taiwan: to educate people about Hep C and the many ways even people not engaging in particular activities might get it and how there is treatment and that people should get it sooner rather than later.

My father, a kidney transplant recipient, was one of those people who also contracted Hepatitis C from a healthcare setting. I promised her that I would help her with her educational mission. The thing is, even as she was facing financial and health uncertainties, she was still thinking about how to help other people.

So, now that I know that she is indeed struggling financially as well, I will send her my donation tomorrow. I hope that you all can help her out with whatever you can as well.

Thanks, one and all!

Tammy

About Sally Webster, Tiana’s Godmother

“I am Sally Webster and have been Denise’s friend for over 20 years, having met her just after she arrived in Taiwan in 2000. I am the director of the American English School here in Kaohsiung, where I manage the school programs, teachers and staff. I also teach some classes there. I have lived in Taiwan since January, 1989 and have worked at AES for about 20 years. I am Tiana’s, godmother and was present at her birth. Denise asked me to make sure Tiana was taken care of in the event of her death. Tiana has now lived with me for about six months and will continue to do so.

Tiana is now 17-years-old and a second-year senior high school student at the Chunghwa School of Arts here in Kaohsiung. As there are no suitable high schools in Heng Chun, Tiana moved to Kaohsiung to live with me while attending school. Denise knew she was very sick, and asked me to promise to make sure Tiana had a place to call her second home as her relationship with her father was a little difficult. Her father, who works in China, is paying me some child support to meet Tiana’s basic needs and has agreed that she will continue to live with me.

I will continue to do my very best to love and support Tiana, as any godmother would. I’m deeply grateful to all who have contributed to Denise’s cause prior to her death. And I am hoping that additional funds can now be raised to support Tiana’s school expenses.”

Can You Help?

We hope to raise NT$500,000

Please contribute what you can, to make a difference for Tiana, in honor of Denise’s life.
